We've seen a lot in 20 years! Sloped properties, rocky soil, small spaces, under decks, special customer requests, and HOA restrictions are all things we are accustomed to working with.

Overcoming Challenges: Small Yard, Big Dreams

Designing for a Small Sloped Yard

We started with a very sloped and unusable narrow side yard with HOA constraints that wouldn't allow the patio to extend beyond the side of the home. Our clients wanted to expand off their existing deck and build a patio with access from the driveway and deck. We had a defined budget to work with.

We designed a space and utilizing steps, retaining walls, a lot of excavation and moving the deck steps for better direct access to the patio and were even able to add a pergola. Check out the project progression below (click a pic for larger view)

Creating Family-friendly spaces.

Designing for fun, privacy and good drainage.

We started with a plain backyard with some under deck drainage issues and mud. Our clients wanted a family friendly space for their kids to play and to entertain guests. They requested some added privacy, access from the side yard gate, and a large enough fire pit area to accommodate a circle of large Adirondack chairs along with flower beds and a tidy place to garden.

After listening carefully to their desires, we thoughtfully designed their space; they loved it! Below is the plan and installation progression (click any picture to enlarge)

Storage Down Under

Storage sense, from mud to marvelous!

Our clients have a beautiful deck. However, under the deck it wasn't so pretty or usable. Our task was to create room for a storage shed on a very sloped section and install a new patio. The whole space had very little grade and we had to consider buried deck post footers.

We excavated 32" of soil and leveled the slope, then, we constructed a retaining wall to allow space for a 6' X 10' storage shed. We kept the whole grade flowing away from the house and added river stone to the balance of the under deck area. As you can see in the photos below; It was quite a transformation.
